And With Easy Access to a 3,000-Mile Bike Trail...

The East Coast Greenway Alliance is paving the way for a 3,000-mile bike trail that will stretch from the northern tip of Maine to the southern tip of Florida. Once completed, the bike trail will stretch across the entire East Coast.
Following the Trail
Since 1991, the East Coast Greenway Alliance has been working to connect states with protected bike paths. So far, the Alliance has gotten 850 miles of the trail designated, and the project is 31 percent complete, Dennis Markatos-Soriano, the executive director of ECGA, told The Atlantic CityLab. By 2020, ECGA says it plans to have another 200 miles of the trail complete. There is no timeline for completion of the entire 3,000-mile project.
"As it winds down the coast, the East Coast Greenway passes through 450 communities in 15 states," The Atlantic CityLab reports. "Instead of cleaving to interstate routes, the Greenway mostly follows the rivers and old train tracks connecting the cities and towns along the coast."
The Alliance is working not only to build new trails but also to connect existing trails in towns and cities. The ECGA says it hopes that the 3,000-mile biking trail will become "an interstate for the health-conscious, eco-friendly age."
