Buy a 213-Year-Old Mine for $2 Million

Here’s something that doesn’t go up for sale very often: A mine. It’s a tourist attraction too. Ruggles Mine in Grafton, N.H. is looking for a buyer. The 235-acre property is up for sale for $2 million.
The 213-year-old mica mine is a tourist attraction in the New England area and includes a gift shop, small museum, and a pit with tunnels and caverns. It makes up reportedly the oldest and largest mine of its kind in the U.S., the Associated Press reports.
The owner, Geraldine Searles, 90, said her late husband purchased the property in 1960 for $20,000 with plans to continue the mining operation there. When the government stopped subsidizing the mining industry, the couple then turned the property into a tourist attraction.
The mine was discovered by Sam Ruggles in 1803. By the early 1930s, an estimated $12 million worth of mica had been removed from the mine. Mica can be used for roof shingles, electrical insulation, cosmetics and scouring powder.
"People are interested in buying something so they can make a living, maybe work six months of the year and go to Florida," says Douglas Martin of Keller Williams Realty, who says several buyers have expressed an interest in the mine so far.
