Shipping Container Homes Aren’t Far-Fetched

It’s a shipping container. No, it’s a home. Call it a “modern, utilitarian, and industrial chic” spin on a home, says realtor.com® in an article that highlights the growing number of shipping containers being transformed into homes in Houston.
In fact, developer Build a Box Homes in Houston is trying to spawn an entire community of shipping container homes in property he purchased in the city’s Fifth Ward neighborhood. So far, he has one such home for sale on the market, a two-bedroom, two-bath shipping container/home listed for $189,995 (check out the listing).
“The whole idea is to make the home affordable but yet efficient and, in turn, better for the environment,” says Trent Draper, the listing agent.
Jerry Hartless, the founder of Build a Box Homes, says he got the idea to use shipping container homes while working in the Middle East and watching how others were being built there.
Realtor.com® notes that the home doesn’t feel boxed in either. Instead, it’s a contemporary home built to feel like a “cozy cottage, with a front porch, peaked roof, and cheery blue hue.” Some decorative stacked stones cover the spot where the two containers are attached. Hartless’ prototype home for sale in Houston is 1,228-square-feet.
