Millennial Wave Strikes the Rust Belt
Millennials are moving to Rust Belt cities in droves. The booming young adult population is offering a resurgence to some of these cities, even as the cities overall see a population decrease, according to a new analysis from The Pew Charitable Trusts.
Millennials are flocking to cities in the Rust Belt because they offer more affordable housing options, and have seen an increase in educational and tech jobs.
The millennial population is growing in places like Baltimore, Buffalo, Grand Rapids, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Chicago, the analysis shows.
Baltimore, for example, has seen its overall population decrease by 4 percent since 2000. But the loss of 28,000 people in the city has been made up somewhat by some 22,000 young professionals who have moved there since then. St. Louis has seen an increase in young professionals due to its growing startup scene and tech economy, the analysis notes.
"St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore are former Rust Belt cities that were given up for dead but are making a comeback because their universities were able to remain world-class centers of research," says Antoine van Agtmael, author and Brookings Institute Trustee.
