Ikea Dips Toe Into Virtual Reality

As buyers and sellers ponder the value of virtual reality when they're involved in a home purchase, popular furniture designer and retailer Ikea is exploring the value it brings to home design.
Step Right In
The Ikea VR Experience app, available now on the app store Steam, lets users explore three kitchen room settings with different styles. Users can change the color of cabinets and drawers with a click. They can also examine the kitchen from different perspectives by changing their height — users can be a 3.3-foot-tall child or a 6.4-foot-tall adult, offering a chance to spot dangers or designs that would be difficult for owners.
Ikea, which says that the app will be available through August, is interested mostly in "consumer feedback as Ikea continues to explore the possible implications of the technology for the home," officials said. Feedback and suggestions for improvement can be sent to an Ikea e-mail address. The app will be "continuously updated until August, when this particular pilot test ends," the company said.
The free app requires the HTC Vive VR headset, released this week for $800, a Windows PC, and an account on the app store Steam.
